Registration & Official ID Programs
Part of Identity, Traceability, and Records
What Is Official Animal Identification?
Official identification is a federal program ensuring that cattle can be traced back to their premises of origin in case of disease outbreak. The Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rule requires official ID for certain cattle movements, particularly across state lines. Official ID is separate from breed registration or farm management identification.
The 840 Tag System
Official ID in the U.S. uses the 840 numbering system—15 digits starting with "840" (the country code for USA). Each 840 number is unique and registered to a specific premises. Official 840 tags can be visual-only or combined with RFID technology.
Types of Official ID Devices
- 840 RFID ear tags: Electronic tags meeting official ID and RFID standards
- 840 visual-only tags: Non-electronic tags with official numbers
- 840 boluses: Ruminal devices with official ID capability
- Brands: In some states, registered brands serve as official ID
When Official ID Is Required
Under current ADT regulations, official ID is required for:
- Sexually intact cattle 18 months or older moving interstate
- All cattle moving interstate that were part of a regulated disease program
- Some cattle moving to slaughter (varies by state)
- Cattle exhibitions, shows, and sales (varies by event)
Premises Registration
To obtain official 840 tags, you must have a registered premises ID (PIN) from your state veterinarian's office. The PIN identifies your farm location in the national traceability database. Registration is free and required before purchasing official tags.
Obtaining Official Tags
- Register your premises with your state veterinarian
- Order 840 tags from approved manufacturers
- Apply tags following manufacturer instructions
- Maintain records of tag application and animal movements
Record-Keeping Requirements
Farms must maintain records of official ID application and cattle movements for 5 years. Records should document animal ID, date of movement, and premises of origin and destination.
Cost Considerations
Official 840 tags cost $3-8 each depending on tag type (visual vs. RFID) and vendor. Premises registration is free. Compare costs of RFID versus visual-only tags based on your management system needs.
