Zoetis CYDECTIN

By Zoetis

Last reviewed: January 2024

CYDECTIN (moxidectin) is Zoetis's broad-spectrum endectocide for cattle, providing control of internal parasites (gastrointestinal worms, lungworm) and external

What is CYDECTIN?

CYDECTIN contains moxidectin, a second-generation macrocyclic lactone (milbemycin class) derived from Streptomyces cyanogriseus. Moxidectin provides:

  • Broader spectrum than first-generation avermectins in some species
  • Longer persistent activity (fat-soluble depot effect)
  • Potential activity against some resistant parasite populations
  • Extended Persistence Advantage

CYDECTIN's key differentiator is duration of protection:

Against Ostertagia ostertagi (brown stomach worm):

  • Pour-On: 35 days persistent activity
  • Injectable: 14-21 days persistent activity
  • This extended protection is critical because Ostertagia:

  • Is the most economically important parasite in temperate climates
  • Has inhibited larval stages that persist over winter
  • Causes subclinical production losses even at low burdens
  • Spectrum of Activity

    Gastrointestinal Nematodes:

Ostertagia, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Oesophagostomum, Bunostomum, Nematodirus, Trichuris

    Lungworm: Dictyocaulus viviparus

    External Parasites:

    Cattle grubs (Hypoderma species)

    Lice (biting and sucking)

    Mites (Psoroptes, Sarcoptes)

    Formulation Options

CYDECTIN Injectable: 1 mL per 110 lb body weight, SQ injection

CYDECTIN Pour-On: 1 mL per 22 lb body weight, along backline

    Key Features

    • Moxidectin Active: Second-generation macrocyclic lactone
    • Longest Persistence: Up to 35 days protection against key parasites
    • Broad Spectrum: Internal and external parasite coverage
    • Inhibited Larvae Control: Effective against dormant Ostertagia
    • Dual Formulations: Injectable and pour-on options

    Advanced Features

    • Milbemycin Class: Different structure than ivermectin/doramectin
    • Fat Deposition: Slow release from body fat extends activity
    • Resistance Alternative: May work in some resistant populations
    • Single Treatment Strategy: One dose for season-long programs

    Ideal For

    Competitive Advantages

What sets CYDECTIN apart from alternatives:

    • CYDECTIN advantages: 1. **Longest Persistence**: More days of protection than any competitor 2. **Strategic Timing**: Treat once, protect for season 3. **Inhibited Larvae**: Addresses dormant parasites effectively 4. **Resistance Potential**: Alternative when ivermectin resistance suspected 5. **Complete Coverage**: External and internal parasites

    Pricing Information

Here is the pricing information for CYDECTIN:

    Pros & Considerations

    Advantages:
    • Longest persistent activity available
    • Effective against inhibited Ostertagia larvae
    • Complete internal/external coverage
    • May overcome some resistance issues
    • Single strategic treatment possible
    Considerations:
    • Not for lactating dairy cattle
    • Slaughter withdrawal required
    • Higher cost than some alternatives
    • Persistent activity means longer environmental exposure
    • Potential for accelerated resistance if overused

    Evaluation Questions

Key questions to consider when evaluating CYDECTIN:

    1. 1. What is our current parasite control strategy? 2. Is extended persistent activity valuable in our grazing system? 3. Have we seen evidence of resistance to other products? 4. What is the economic impact of subclinical parasitism in our herd? 5. Can we justify premium pricing for extended protection? 6. How does our pasture contamination cycle work seasonally?
