DECTOMAX (doramectin) is Zoetis's broad-spectrum parasiticide for cattle, providing effective control of internal parasites (gastrointestinal roundworms, lungwo

What is DECTOMAX?

DECTOMAX contains doramectin, a macrocyclic lactone antiparasitic produced by Streptomyces avermitilis fermentation. Doramectin is highly effective against both internal and external parasites, with persistent activity that continues working for weeks after administration.

Spectrum of Activity

Internal Parasites (Gastrointestinal):

  • Ostertagia ostertagi (brown stomach worm) — including inhibited larvae
  • Cooperia species
  • Haemonchus placei (barber pole worm)
  • Trichostrongylus species
  • Oesophagostomum radiatum (nodular worm)
  • Bunostomum phlebotomum (hookworm)
  • Internal Parasites (Respiratory):

  • Dictyocaulus viviparus (lungworm)
  • External Parasites:

  • Hypoderma bovis/lineatum (cattle grubs)
  • Psoroptes ovis (mange mites)
  • Haematopinus eurysternus (lice)
  • Linognathus vituli (lice)
  • Solenopotes capillatus (lice)
  • Persistent Activity

    DECTOMAX provides extended protection:

  • Injectable: Up to 21 days against certain nematodes
  • Pour-On: Up to 21-35 days depending on parasite species
  • This persistence is particularly valuable for cattle returning to contaminated pastures after treatment.

    Formulation Options

DECTOMAX Injectable: 1 mL per 110 lb body weight, SQ injection

DECTOMAX Pour-On: 1 mL per 22 lb body weight, along backline

    Key Features

    • Broad Spectrum: Internal nematodes, lungworm, grubs, lice, and mange
    • Persistent Activity: Protection continues 3+ weeks post-treatment
    • Two Formulations: Injectable or pour-on based on preference
    • Inhibited Larvae Control: Effective against dormant Ostertagia
    • Single Treatment: One dose provides comprehensive coverage

    Advanced Features

    • Macrocyclic Lactone Class: Proven mechanism for parasite control
    • Fat-Soluble Depot: Slow release from injection site extends activity
    • Grub Migration Timing: Strategic timing prevents grub migration reactions
    • Combination Potential: Can be used with other products when needed

    Evaluation Questions

Key questions to consider when evaluating DECTOMAX:

    1. 1. When do we currently deworm cattle? 2. Have we done fecal egg counts to assess parasite burden? 3. What parasites are present in our environment (regional history)? 4. Do we have cattle on pasture where reinfection is a concern? 5. Are replacement dairy heifers being treated for parasites? 6. Do we have grub or lice issues in our herd? 7. What is our current parasite control cost per head?
