Zoetis LUTALYSE HighCon

By Zoetis

Last reviewed: January 2024

LUTALYSE HighCon Injection is Zoetis's concentrated prostaglandin F2α (dinoprost tromethamine) formulation that delivers the same 25 mg active dose as original

What is LUTALYSE HighCon?

LUTALYSE HighCon (dinoprost tromethamine) is a concentrated prostaglandin F2α injection containing 12.5 mg/mL of active ingredient, compared to 5 mg/mL in standard LUTALYSE. Both formulations deliver the same 25 mg labeled dose, but LUTALYSE HighCon achieves this in just 2 mL rather than 5 mL.

How Prostaglandins Work

Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) is a natural hormone produced by the uterus that causes regression (destruction) of the corpus luteum (CL). In reproductive management:

  • Luteolysis: PGF2α causes the CL to regress within 24-48 hours
  • Progesterone Drop: Blood progesterone falls as CL dies
  • Estrus Induction: Cow comes into heat 2-5 days after injection
  • Ovulation: Dominant follicle ovulates, available for fertilization
  • Why High Concentration Matters

The 2 mL dose volume offers practical advantages:

Faster Handling: Smaller injection delivered more quickly—critical for large groups

Reduced Reactions: Less volume means smaller injection site response

More Doses Per Bottle: 100-mL bottle = 50 doses (vs. 20 doses of standard)

Lower Shipping Cost: Concentrate ships more efficiently

Easier Storage: Less refrigerator/cabinet space needed

    Labeled Indications

  • Estrus synchronization and fixed-time AI protocols
  • Treatment of unobserved or silent estrus
  • Induction of abortion (early pregnancy)
  • Treatment of pyometra and mummified fetus
  • Induction of parturition (with appropriate timing)
  • Key Features

    • High Concentration Formula: 12.5 mg/mL delivers full 25 mg dose in 2 mL
    • Same Proven Efficacy: Bioequivalent to standard LUTALYSE—identical results
    • IM or SQ Administration: Labeled for both intramuscular and subcutaneous injection
    • Extended Bottle Life: 50 doses per 100-mL bottle reduces waste
    • Room Temperature Stable: Store at controlled room temperature (20-25°C)

    Advanced Features

    • Natural Prostaglandin: Dinoprost tromethamine is the salt of natural PGF2α
    • Rapid Absorption: Quick uptake from injection site for reliable timing
    • Protocol Versatility: Works in all standard sync protocols (Ovsynch, CO-Synch, Presynch, etc.)
    • Residue-Tested: Established withdrawal time for beef and dairy (0 days milk, 0 days meat)

    Ideal For

    Competitive Advantages

What sets LUTALYSE HighCon apart from alternatives:

    • LUTALYSE HighCon advantages: 1. **Efficiency**: 60% less injection volume saves time on every cow 2. **Economics**: More doses per bottle, lower cost per treatment 3. **Cattle Comfort**: Smaller injection volume reduces tissue reaction 4. **Zoetis Quality**: Same trusted LUTALYSE brand, concentrated formulation 5. **Protocol Proven**: Compatible with all established synchronization programs 6. **Zero Withdrawal**: No milk or meat withholding period

    Pros & Considerations

    Advantages:
    • Same proven efficacy as original LUTALYSE
    • 60% smaller injection volume
    • More doses per bottle
    • Zero milk and meat withdrawal
    • Compatible with all sync protocols
    • Faster handling in large groups
    Considerations:
    • Requires accurate low-volume dosing (2 mL)
    • Must not be used in pregnant cattle (causes abortion)
    • Human safety precautions (wear gloves, especially pregnant women/asthmatics)
    • No extra-label use in minor species without VCPR

    Evaluation Questions

Key questions to consider when evaluating LUTALYSE HighCon:

    1. 1. What is our current prostaglandin product and protocol? 2. How many cows/heifers do we inject at typical reproductive events? 3. Are we experiencing injection site reactions with current PG? 4. What is our time constraint for processing groups through the chute? 5. Do we have accurate 2 mL dosing capability (appropriate syringes)? 6. Are handlers trained on proper injection technique and safety? 7. What is our per-dose prostaglandin cost currently? 8. How do we track PG treatments and breeding dates?
