EAZI-BREED CIDR (Controlled Internal Drug Release) is Zoetis's intravaginal progesterone-releasing insert that revolutionized estrous synchronization in dairy a

What is EAZI-BREED CIDR?

EAZI-BREED CIDR is an intravaginal insert containing 1.38 grams of progesterone in a silicone elastomer molded over a nylon spine. When inserted into the vagina, the CIDR releases progesterone continuously over 7 days, mimicking the progesterone phase of the estrous cycle.

How Progesterone Controls the Cycle

Progesterone is the dominant hormone during the luteal phase (days 4-17 of the 21-day cycle). High progesterone:

  • Suppresses LH pulses from the pituitary
  • Prevents ovulation of the dominant follicle
  • Prepares the uterus for potential pregnancy
  • Maintains pregnancy if conception occurs
  • When progesterone falls (naturally at luteolysis or upon CIDR removal), the cow is "released" to come into estrus within 2-3 days.

    The CIDR Advantage

Adding CIDR to synchronization protocols provides several benefits:

  • Induces Cyclicity: Non-cycling (anestrous) cows respond to CIDR even without a functional corpus luteum
  • Tighter Synchrony: Cows come into heat in a narrower window for fixed-time AI
  • Improved Conception: Better follicle development and luteal support
  • Protocol Flexibility: Can be added to various sync programs
  • Common CIDR Protocols

7-Day CIDR + PG Protocol (Heifers):

  • Day 0: Insert CIDR
  • Day 7: Remove CIDR + PGF2α injection
  • Days 8-10: Heat detection and AI
  • 5-Day CO-Synch + CIDR (Cows):

  • Day 0: GnRH + CIDR
  • Day 5: Remove CIDR + PGF2α
  • Day 6: Second PGF2α
  • Day 8: GnRH + Fixed-Time AI (66-72 hours after CIDR removal)
  • Ovsynch + CIDR (Problem Breeders):

  • Day 0: GnRH + CIDR
  • Day 7: Remove CIDR + PGF2α
  • Day 9 (56 hrs): GnRH
  • Day 10 (16 hrs): Fixed-Time AI
  • Key Features

    • Controlled Progesterone Release: Consistent 1.38g progesterone delivery over 7 days
    • Flexible T-Shape Design: Easy insertion and retention with minimal vaginal irritation
    • Tail for Easy Removal: Attached nylon tail allows simple extraction at protocol end
    • Single-Use Convenience: Each CIDR is individually packaged and sterile
    • Universal Applicator: EAZI-BREED Applicator sold separately for hygienic insertion

    Advanced Features

    • Induces Cyclicity: Brings anestrous cows into cycling status for breeding
    • Ovarian Reset: Causes turnover of dominant follicle for improved oocyte quality
    • Protocol Versatility: Compatible with Ovsynch, CO-Synch, and custom protocols
    • Heifer-Friendly: Sized appropriately for virgin heifers
    • Proven Research Base: Thousands of published studies validating CIDR protocols

    Pros & Considerations

    Advantages:
    • Industry gold standard for progesterone supplementation
    • Induces cyclicity in anestrous cows
    • Improves fixed-time AI success rates
    • Well-tolerated with minimal side effects
    • Compatible with all major sync protocols
    • Extensive research support
    Considerations:
    • Requires handling cattle twice (insertion and removal)
    • Small percentage of CIDRs may be lost (1-3%)
    • Causes some vaginal mucus discharge (normal)
    • Not for use in cattle intended for food within 7 days
    • Single-use only (do not reuse)
    • Requires additional hormones for complete protocol

    Evaluation Questions

Key questions to consider when evaluating EAZI-BREED CIDR:

    1. 1. What is our current 21-day pregnancy rate and heat detection rate? 2. What percentage of cows are not cycling by voluntary waiting period end? 3. Are we using timed AI or heat detection-based breeding? 4. How many cows are handled at each reproductive event? 5. What is our current synchronization protocol? 6. Do we have adequate cattle handling facilities for CIDR insertion? 7. Are breeding technicians trained on CIDR protocols? 8. What are our conception rates by service number?
