What is Inforce 3?

Inforce 3 is a modified-live virus (MLV) intranasal vaccine containing:

  • Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus
  • Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV)
  • Parainfluenza Type 3 (PI3) virus
  • Unlike injectable vaccines, Inforce 3 is sprayed directly into the nasal passage, stimulating local mucosal immunity where respiratory infections begin.

    Intranasal Advantage

The intranasal route provides unique benefits:

Rapid Local Immunity: Protection develops at the respiratory mucosa within days

Maternal Antibody Override: Works even in calves with high colostral antibodies

Early Life Use: Licensed for calves as young as 1 week old

First-Line Defense: IgA antibodies at mucosa block viral entry

    How Mucosal Immunity Works

When vaccine virus contacts nasal mucosa:

  • Local immune cells recognize viral antigens
  • IgA antibody production begins at mucosal surface
  • Memory cells populate the respiratory tract
  • Upon challenge, rapid local response neutralizes virus before systemic infection
  • Young Calf Application

Inforce 3 is particularly valuable for dairy calf programs:

  • Can be given at birth/first week while maternal antibodies are still high
  • Protects during the high-risk pre-weaning period
  • Works alongside colostrum-derived passive immunity
  • No injection site reaction in valuable replacement heifers
  • Key Features

    • Intranasal Delivery: 1 mL spray into one nostril for complete dose
    • Three-Way Viral Coverage: IBR, BRSV, PI3 protection
    • Early Age Use: Licensed as early as 1 week of age
    • Rapid Onset: Local immunity develops within days
    • Maternal Antibody Compatible: Works despite passive antibodies

    Advanced Features

    • Mucosal IgA Response: Local antibodies at site of infection
    • Modified-Live Potency: Strong, long-lasting immune memory
    • Needle-Free Administration: No injection site reactions
    • Stress Timing Flexibility: Can be given near stressful events
    • Booster Flexibility: Single intranasal dose or boost with injectable later

    Ideal For

    Competitive Advantages

    Pros & Considerations

    Advantages:
    • Works in very young calves (1 week+)
    • Overcomes maternal antibody interference
    • Rapid local immunity development
    • No injection sites
    • Easy to administer
    • Establishes mucosal immunity at infection site
    Considerations:
    • Does not include BVD (need injectable for complete coverage)
    • Must use within 1 hour of reconstitution
    • Some calves resist nasal restraint
    • Sneezing can aerosolize vaccine (avoid in sick calves)
    • Storage at 2-7°C required

    Evaluation Questions

Key questions to consider when evaluating Inforce 3:

    1. 1. At what age are we currently vaccinating calves for respiratory disease? 2. What is our pre-weaning respiratory disease incidence? 3. Are we seeing vaccine failures potentially due to maternal antibody interference? 4. What respiratory viruses are causing disease (diagnostic history)? 5. Can we incorporate intranasal vaccination into calf processing workflow? 6. Are replacement heifers having injection site reactions affecting value? 7. What is the current cost per calf for respiratory vaccination?
